Once upon a time, the rich and powerful sultans of Zanzibar ruled over this captivating coastline. Times have changed, of course, but little has changed in terms of its natural beauty. And the Indian Ocean Beach Resort most certainly makes the most of it. Sitting right on the coconut-coloured sands and turquoise seas, it's bagged a top-notch spot. In fact, the only thing between the cashmere-soft shores is a strip of emerald-green grass. So it won't have to be a toss up between the beach and the pool.
Talking of pools, the lagoon-style lovely here is just steps away from the sand. Sunk into a large sun terrace, it's flanked by cushioned sun loungers and parasols. There's also Coconut Willy's pool bar on hand when you're in need of an ice-cold drink. With a fruity cocktail to hand and the sound of the swishing palm trees, you'll be chilled out in nano seconds.
Walking through the hotel grounds you'll see more than a touch of Mother Nature's handiwork. Most of the ground's covered with rich green grass, dotted with plants and exotic palm trees. But the undoubted stars of the show are the magnificent Baobab trees. With thick trunks and spindly branches, they're an unmistakable slice of African splendour.
When it comes to rooms, this place may not have the most – but it definitely has the best. These are more than just hotel rooms – they're like mini cottages. Thatched roofs. Whitewashed walls. And dark wooden beams on the ceiling. The bottom level rooms are individually dotted around the spectacular grounds, with some enjoying a seaside setting. Up on the top level, you'll find natural wooden balconies where you can soak up the magnificent views.
Come and see why the sultans of Zanzibar chose to rule this gorgeous slice of Africa. The ultimate exotic hideaway, this is as good as it gets.
